RAPID PROTOTYPING

Rapid prototyping is a collective group of techniques which allows us to quickly fabricate a scale model of a physical part or assembly using three-dimensional computer aided design (CAD) data. Our innovative approach is integral to modern manufacturing, allowing for fast and efficient development cycles.

Construction of the part or assembly is usually finished using our 3D printer which utilises “additive layer manufacturing” technology. This process involves building up the part layer by layer from a digital model, which provides flexibility and precision in creating complex and intricate designs.

Rapid prototyping includes a variety of manufacturing technologies, with most utilising layered additive manufacturing. However, other technologies used for rapid prototyping include high-speed matching, casting, moulding and extruding all of which can be provided through our extensive team of ISO accredited suppliers.

    OUR RAPID PROTOTYPING TECHNIQUES

Additive manufacturing is the most common form of rapid prototyping. This method involves building parts layer by layer, from materials such as plastics, metals, and composites. This is highly versatile and can produce detailed and accurate prototypes directly from CAD data.

The subtractive process of high-speed machining involves the rapid removal of material from a solid block to create a prototype. High-speed machining is suitable for producing metal parts with high precision and is often used when a prototype needs to reflect the properties of the final product closely.

In rapid prototyping, casting is a technique that involves creating a mould from a prototype model and then using it to produce parts in a different material. This process is beneficial for making multiple copies of a prototype and for working with materials that are difficult to 3D print.

Techniques such as injection moulding can be used when a large number of prototypes are needed. This process involves creating a mould from CAD and then injecting material to form the prototype.

The extrusion method involves pushing material through a shaped die to form a continuous profile. In rapid prototyping, extruding can be used to create parts with uniform cross-sections, such as tubing or complex profiles.

Metspin works with all the above techniques, and a mixture based on your specific project needs. We can ensure that prototypes are produced efficiently, accurately, and to the highest quality standards.
